Longest-living dog breeds

Small breeds live longer. It's a strict biological rule — bigger dogs grow faster, age faster, and die younger. A Chihuahua can live 16 years; a Great Dane often only 7. Ranked by typical max lifespan from our breed guides.

Why size matters

Larger dogs grow faster as puppies, which accelerates cellular aging. Their organs and skeletons are also under more mechanical stress over a lifetime, and they're more prone to cancer (especially Goldens, Berners, Boxers, and Mastiffs). Keeping any dog LEAN throughout life is the single biggest lifespan factor under your control — overweight dogs lose 1-2 years on average regardless of breed.
