Dog parks — basics

Are dog parks safe?+

Most dog parks are safe for socialized adult dogs, but altercations happen. The biggest risks: rough play with mismatched-size dogs (use small-dog areas), disease transmission (require current vaccines for your dog), unsupervised aggressive dogs (leave at the first sign of arousal), and theft/escape from poorly-fenced parks. Newly-rescued dogs should NOT visit dog parks until they've been with you 4-6 weeks and been evaluated for reactivity.

What vaccines does my dog need before going to a dog park?+

At minimum: rabies, DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvo, parainfluenza), and Bordetella (kennel cough). Many dog parks recommend leptospirosis and canine influenza vaccines as well. Puppies under 16 weeks should NOT visit dog parks — their immune systems aren't fully developed yet, and parvovirus is fatal. Wait until 2 weeks after the final puppy vaccine round.

What's the best time to go to a dog park?+

Off-peak hours: weekday mornings (7-9am), weekday afternoons (2-4pm), and weekend mid-mornings. AVOID: weekday 5-7pm (after-work rush), weekend 10am-2pm (peak crowds), and any time the temperature is above 80°F (heat exhaustion risk for most breeds). Off-peak hours are also better for reactive or shy dogs and breeds with stranger-dog issues.

Should small and large dogs be in the same area?+

No. Almost all serious dog-park injuries happen in size-mixed areas — predatory drift (a play sequence triggering prey response in larger dogs), accidental crushing during rough wrestling, and territorial conflicts. Use the small-dog area if your dog is under 25 lb, even if your small dog is 'fearless' around big dogs.

How do I find a fenced dog park near me?+

Use our directory: filter by 'fenced' on the amenities page or search your city. Every park in our database is tagged with feature flags (fenced, off-leash, water, shade, small-dog area, etc.) sourced from real visitor reviews.

Dog park etiquette

What should I bring to the dog park?+

Essentials: poop bags (always), leash (mandatory at entry/exit), water bottle + collapsible bowl, current vaccine tags on the collar, your phone for photo and emergency contact. Optional: tennis balls, towel for muddy dogs, treats (use sparingly — many parks ask owners not to bring food). Don't bring: rawhides, food bowls, or expensive toys you can't replace if claimed.

What should I NOT do at a dog park?+

Don't bring puppies under 4 months. Don't bring intact females in heat or unaltered males without strong recall. Don't bring more than 2 dogs alone — you can't manage three. Don't bring small children (under 6) — they're injury risk. Don't sit on your phone — watch your dog. Don't break up fights with hands — use water bottles, loud noises, or wheelbarrow technique. Don't leave poop. Don't enter while leashed if your dog is reactive.

How do I know if my dog is having a good time?+

Loose body, soft tail, mutual play (alternating chase/be-chased), play bows, breaks every 30-60 seconds, return to you for water. RED flags: tail tucked, lip-licking, yawning, hard eye, freeze, hiding behind you, hackles up, sustained chase by multiple dogs (mob behavior), pinning without play. If you see red flags, leave immediately — pushing through creates fear-aggression.

What do I do if my dog gets in a fight?+

DO NOT grab collars or use your hands — almost all dog bite injuries to humans happen during fight breakups. Use the wheelbarrow technique: each owner grabs their dog's hind legs and lifts the back end up, then walks backward. Or spray water from a bottle, throw a coat over both dogs to disorient them, or use loud noises. Once separated, leave the park immediately and check both dogs for injuries.

Dog age & lifespan

Is the '1 dog year = 7 human years' rule accurate?+

No. The '× 7' rule has been debunked by modern research. UCSD's 2019 epigenetic clock study showed dogs age about 15× faster than humans in their first year, then dramatically slower. By age 2, your dog is biologically ~24 in human years. After that, large and giant breeds age faster than small breeds. Use our dog age calculator for the modern formula.

Why do small dogs live longer than big dogs?+

Larger dogs grow faster as puppies, which accelerates cellular aging. Their organs and skeletons are also under more mechanical stress over a lifetime, and they're more prone to cancer. A typical Chihuahua lives 14-16 years; a Great Dane often only 7-10. Keeping any dog LEAN throughout life is the single biggest lifespan factor under your control.

When is my dog considered a senior?+

It varies by size: small dogs (under 25 lb) become senior around age 11, medium dogs (25-50 lb) at age 10, large dogs (50-100 lb) at age 8, and giant breeds (100+ lb) at age 7. Senior dogs benefit from twice-yearly vet checkups, joint supplements, dental care, and adjusted exercise routines.

Choosing a breed

What's the easiest dog breed for first-time owners?+

Top choices: Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bichon Frise, Boxer, and Havanese. They share three traits — easy trainability, friendly temperament with strangers/dogs/kids, and forgiving of beginner mistakes. AVOID for first-time owners: working breeds (GSD working line, Belgian Malinois, Cane Corso), independent breeds (Husky, Shiba, Akita), and demanding breeds (Border Collie, Aussie working line, Vizsla).

What's the smartest dog breed?+

By Stanley Coren's intelligence rankings: Border Collie (#1), Poodle (#2), German Shepherd (#3), Golden Retriever (#4), Doberman (#5), Shetland Sheepdog (#6), Labrador (#7), Papillon (#8), Rottweiler (#9), Australian Cattle Dog (#10). 'Smart' here means working/obedience intelligence — instinctive intelligence (hunting, herding) varies by breed differently.

What dog breed is best for apartments?+

Top apartment breeds: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bichon Frise, Greyhound (yes, the racetrack ones — they're 18-hour-a-day couch potatoes), French Bulldog, Boston Terrier, Shih Tzu, Havanese, Pug, and surprisingly Pomeranian. Look for low-energy + small/medium size + friendly with strangers (elevators) + minimal barking.

What's the difference between a Husky and a Malamute?+

Both are Arctic sled dogs but bred for different jobs. Siberian Huskies (35-60 lb) were bred to RACE — pulling light loads at speed for distance. Alaskan Malamutes (75-100 lb) were bred to HAUL — pulling heavy freight slowly. Mals are bigger, fluffier, more independent, and more prone to dog-aggression. Huskies are smaller, more vocal, and slightly more sociable. Both need cold climates, fenced yards, and 90+ minutes of daily exercise.

What's the difference between a French Bulldog and an English Bulldog?+

Frenchies are smaller (16-28 lb) with bat ears; English Bulldogs are larger (40-55 lb) with rose ears and a heavier wrinkled face. Both are brachycephalic (flat-faced) but English Bulldogs have it WORSE — about 95% of show-line English Bulldogs have measurable BOAS vs ~50% of Frenchies. Both have shortened lifespans (8-12 years), heavy lifetime vet costs, and need C-section breeding.

Health & safety

When should I take my dog to a 24/7 emergency vet?+

Immediate emergencies: bloat (distended belly + retching), heatstroke (panting heavily + collapse), seizures, suspected poisoning (chocolate, xylitol, grapes, lily, antifreeze), hit by a car, breathing difficulty, prolonged vomiting/diarrhea, sudden lameness, eye prolapse (Pug/Pekingese), unproductive straining to urinate. Don't wait — most fatal dog emergencies are time-sensitive within hours. Save your closest 24/7 emergency vet to your phone now.

What human foods are toxic to dogs?+

DEFINITELY toxic: chocolate (any kind, dose-dependent by dog weight), xylitol (sugar substitute in gum, peanut butter, baked goods — fatal in small amounts), grapes/raisins (kidney failure), onions/garlic, macadamia nuts, alcohol, raw bread dough, coffee, raw bones (cooked bones splinter). Marginal: avocado pit, fatty foods (pancreatitis risk), large amounts of corn, dairy if lactose-intolerant. When in doubt, call ASPCA Animal Poison Control: 888-426-4435.

How much exercise does my dog actually need?+

Wildly variable by breed. Toy breeds (Chihuahua, Maltese) need 20-40 min/day. Small breeds (Frenchie, Pug) need 30-60 min/day. Medium breeds (Beagle, Bulldog) need 45-60 min/day. Sporting breeds (Lab, Golden, Pointer) need 60-120 min/day. Working breeds (Husky, Mal, GSD) need 90-150+ min/day. Herding breeds (Border Collie, Aussie) need 90+ min PLUS mental work. Under-exercised dogs become destructive — adjust to your dog's actual breed needs, not your convenience.
