Dog age calculator
How old is your dog in human years, really? Uses the 2019 UCSD epigenetic-clock formula adjusted by breed size. The classic "× 7" rule was wrong — your Chihuahua and your Great Dane don't age the same way.
Life-stage milestones for a medium dog
- ✓6 monthsPuberty starts
- ✓1 yearsFully grown for small/medium breeds
- ✓2 yearsSkeletal maturity reached
- 5 yearsMid-life — start senior bloodwork screenings
- 10 yearsOfficially senior — annual vet visits become 6-monthly
- 13 yearsGeriatric stage — adjust diet and exercise
Why "× 7" is wrong
The classic "1 dog year = 7 human years" formula has been debunked. UCSD researchers analyzed DNA methylation patterns in dogs (published 2019) and found dogs age about 15× faster than humans in their first year, then slow down dramatically. By age 2, your dog is biologically equivalent to a 24-year-old human. After that, large and giant breeds age faster than small ones — a 7-year-old Great Dane is geriatric while a 7-year-old Chihuahua is still middle-aged. This calculator uses the modern size-adjusted formula.

Frequently asked
Is the '1 dog year = 7 human years' formula accurate?+
No. The '× 7' rule has been debunked by modern epigenetic research. UCSD scientists found dogs age about 15× faster in their first year, then dramatically slower after age 2. By age 2, your dog is biologically equivalent to a 24-year-old human. After that, large and giant breeds age faster than small breeds.
How is dog age actually calculated?+
The modern formula starts with year 1 = 15 human years, year 2 = 24 human years (so year 2 adds 9). After that, each dog year adds about 4 human years for small breeds, 4.5 for medium, 5.5 for large, and 7 for giant breeds. Your dog's size matters more than people realize.
When is my dog considered a senior?+
It depends on size. Small dogs become senior around age 11, medium dogs at 10, large dogs at 8, and giant breeds at 7. Senior dogs benefit from twice-yearly vet checkups, joint supplements, and adjusted exercise routines.
Why do small dogs live longer than big dogs?+
Larger dogs grow faster as puppies, which accelerates cellular aging. Their organs and skeleton are also under more mechanical stress over a lifetime. A typical Chihuahua lives 14-16 years; a Great Dane often only 7-10. Keeping any dog lean is the single biggest lifespan factor under your control.
