Winter dog care — what to know

Salt burns paws. Antifreeze kills in a teaspoon. Frostbite hits in 30 minutes. Brachycephalic breeds shouldn't be outside below 40°F. 6 things every owner should know.

🧂

Road salt burns paws and causes vomiting

Standard road salt (sodium chloride) burns paw pads on contact and causes severe vomiting/electrolyte issues if licked. Switch to pet-safe ice melt at home (Safe Paw, Morton Safe-T-Pet). On walks, rinse paws with warm water and a soft towel after every outing. Booties protect for sustained exposure but most dogs hate them — Musher's Secret wax is the cheaper alternative.

❄️

Cold-tolerance varies wildly by breed

Northern breeds (Husky, Mal, Sammy, Akita, Newfie, Saint Bernard, Pyrenees) thrive in below-freezing weather. Single-coated and brachycephalic breeds (Pug, Frenchie, Bulldog, Boston, Greyhound, Whippet, IG, Chihuahua) are at risk below 40°F. Cold tolerance also drops with age, illness, and thin coat. Sweaters/coats aren't fashion — they're medical equipment for thin-coated dogs.

🥶

Frostbite hits ears, tail, paws first

Sub-32°F + wind chill causes frostbite in 30+ minutes for most dogs. The thin-skinned extremities go first: ear tips, tail tip, paws, scrotum. Symptoms: pale or gray skin, ice on fur, then blisters and dead tissue. Don't rub frostbitten skin — gradually warm with body heat or LUKEWARM (not hot) water. Severe frostbite needs vet care — ear-tip amputation is sometimes necessary.

🚗

Antifreeze tastes sweet and kills

Ethylene glycol antifreeze tastes sweet to dogs (and kids). Even a teaspoon can cause fatal kidney failure in 24-72 hours. Watch for puddles in driveways and parking lots in winter. Switch to propylene glycol antifreeze (Sierra brand) which is dog-safer. If suspected ingestion: vomiting + seizures + frequent urination — head to ER vet IMMEDIATELY. There's an antidote but only if started within 8-12 hours.

Indoor enrichment when it's too cold

Below 0°F (Northern climates) sometimes means no walks. Replace exercise with mental work: snuffle mats (food-finding), puzzle feeders (Kong, Lickimat), 'find it' games hiding treats around the house, training sessions (5 short ones beats one long one), tug + flirt pole indoors. A mentally tired dog is as satisfied as a physically tired one. Tug 10 minutes 3× a day = walked dog.

💧

Dehydration is real in winter

Dry indoor heat dehydrates dogs without obvious thirst. Refill water bowls 2× daily; add a fountain if your dog ignores still water. Frozen Kongs help. Dehydration in winter is silent — pinch skin between shoulder blades; if it doesn't snap back, hydrate more.
