First time at a dog park? The complete pre-visit checklist

Vaccinations, gear, timing, and how to read the energy of the park before you walk in. Everything to do before, during, and after your first visit.

Going to the dog park for the first time can be overwhelming. Here's the complete checklist โ€” what to do before you leave, during the visit, and after you get home.

Before you leave

  • Your dog is at least 4 months old and fully vaccinated (rabies, DHPP, bordetella)
  • Your dog is spayed or neutered (most parks require this for adult dogs)
  • Your dog has solid recall โ€” they come when called, every time
  • You've watched your dog around at least 5 unfamiliar dogs in a calmer setting
  • You've fed your dog at least 90 minutes before the visit (light meal โ€” never go on an empty or full stomach)
  • You've checked the park's hours, rules, and amenities (use this site!)

What to bring

  • Leash (for the trip in and out โ€” and emergencies)
  • Collar with up-to-date ID tag
  • Water bowl + bottle of water (if the park doesn't have a fountain)
  • At least 4 waste bags (more than you think you need)
  • Towel for muddy paws
  • Your phone (silenced, but accessible)

What NOT to bring

  • Treats or food
  • High-value toys
  • Children under 8 (most parks restrict this)
  • A dog that's anxious, sick, in heat, or under 4 months

At the entrance

  • Stand in the vestibule for a minute. Watch the energy.
  • Look for: bullying, resource guarding, one dog being chased by 3+ others.
  • If anything feels off, walk away. There's always tomorrow.

During the visit

  • Unclip the leash as soon as you're in the off-leash area
  • Walk around โ€” don't camp in one spot
  • Watch your dog's tail, ears, and posture
  • Step in if play turns one-sided
  • Leave when your dog is tired but happy โ€” not exhausted

After you get home

  • Towel off paws and belly
  • Check for ticks (especially in spring/summer)
  • Offer water (not a full meal for at least 30 min)
  • Note what worked and what didn't for next time

The first visit sets the tone for every visit after. Take it slow.
