Lake Erie etiquette for dog owners

  • Algae alert: Avoid Lake Erie water during harmful algal blooms (typically Aug-Sep). Cyanobacteria can be fatal to dogs. Check Ohio EPA advisories before swimming.
  • Currents: Lake Erie has strong rip currents, especially after storms. Watch your dog like you'd watch a small child.
  • Drinking water: Don't let your dog drink lake water. Bring fresh water and a collapsible bowl.
  • Rinse off: Many beaches have rinse stations. If not, bring a gallon of fresh water for paws and belly to flush sand and any algae.
  • Zebra mussels: Sharp shells along the shore. Check your dog's paws for cuts before driving home.
